Posters have been circulating on campus since before winter break; stickers have been placed all over campus; promotions have been held in downtown businesses. All of this has contributed to the buzz of an upcoming concert at the University of Wyoming.
Saturday Trampled by Turtles along with Elephant Revival will take the stage at the Arts and Science’s Auditorium at 8 p.m.
“Trampled by Turtles is a very well-known band in the bluegrass realm. The university hasn’t had a large scale bluegrass show in almost ten years, and Concerts and Convocations felt that it was past due,” said Maddy Graham, the lead student programmer for Concerts and Convocations. “Our goal is to bring shows that students will enjoy and we think that this show will bring a new crowd of students to our show, which is exactly what we wanted. We also have a couple irons in the fire with a couple more shows this semester that I feel will be able to reach out to other students.”
Trampled by Turtles formed in 2003 in Duluth, Minn. and has primarily focused on bluegrass type music along with indie folk and alternative country, according to the band’s website. The band has produced eight albums with their most recent one being “Wild Animals” and has performed at major festivals such as Coachella, Bumbershoot, Lollapalooza and even selling out at Red Rocks this past fall.
Trampled by Turtles has also partnered up with Elephant Revival for their show in Laramie. Elephant Revival is a five-musician band that focuses on bluegrass type music and is also experimenting with Celtic, Americana and folk undertones.
With both bands getting together and playing, plus the early tickets sales and creative advertising the Concert looks to bring in a lot of student support and a full audience, said Jennifer Kirk, the assistant director for the Wyoming Union.
“We confirmed the show late last fall semester so we did an online only presale to help create some buzz over the holidays since we didn’t have students here,” Kirk said. “We sold a decent amount of tickets and we did a multitude of really cool and innovative marketing techniques that I don’t think we’ve ever used before.”
Concerts and Convocations have done a multitude of different marketing techniques to prep for the concert Saturday. CAC was able to get downtown business to help run promotions for ticket holders while poster, stickers and other goods have been circulating around campus and the Laramie area, said Graham. There was even a social media contest to help spread the word of the concert along with online ticket sales over winter break.
Students have been taking notice of all the buzz in anticipation for the event.
“I was already pretty excited when I heard that Trampled by Turtles were coming to UW, but it just surprises me how much support it’s gotten on campus and even in Laramie,” Jennifer Gardner, a sophomore accounting major, said. “It seems everywhere I turn you can’t help but turn into a poster or a flyer for the event and personally I’m glad to see it.”
After their show in Laramie, Trampled by Turtles’ next appearance will be in Tampa, Fla. March 8, while Elephant Revival will be going to Park City, Utah March 19.
