Police arrested a Laramie man last week following allegations he assaulted a pregnant woman and fractured his 3-month-old child’s skull.
Zachary Fisher faces three charges for these crimes. The first charge, aggravated child abuse, is a felony punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment. His second charge is aggravated assault and battery, also a felony that is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. Battery of a household member is his third charge and is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months imprisonment and up to a $750 fine.
According to court documents, Laramie Police Department (LPD) dispatched officers to Ivinson Memorial Hospital on September 1 because an infant received a skull fracture. The child was transported to Denver for treatment. When police officers interviewed Fisher, he said during a 15-minute period alone with the infant, he left the infant on the back of a couch and the infant fell.
In a probable cause affidavit, Robert Terry, an LPD sergeant, said medical personnel were skeptical the injury could have occurred as Fisher claimed.
“Medical personnel indicated that this type of fracture was extremely concerning to medical personnel as it was not believed that this was likely caused from a fall from the couch as the defendant described,” Terry said.
Terry then interviewed the infant’s mother, and said it “was apparent” the infant’s mother did not believe Fisher’s statement.
Terry met with the mother on January 28 to discuss ongoing domestic issues with Fisher, and the mother told Terry that Fisher physically abused her in February 2014. She provided text messages and pictures of her injuries to support her claim.
She said while she was pregnant with the infant in the previous allegations, Fisher had assaulted her and gave her a black eye.
The mother also noted seeing a mark on the infant’s lip on December 17, when Fisher was returning the infant after a visit. When she questioned him about the mark, he told her “not to question him about their child” and proceeded to shove her to the floor.
Fisher is out after providing 10 percent of his $50,000 bail, under the condition that he does not make contact with the victims in the case.
