Wyoming Cowboys senior swimmer Adam Kalms made his third trip to the NCAA Championships where he competed in three events.
Kalms began the NCAA championships in Iowa City, Iowa by swimming in the 200 individual medley event. He recorded the third fastest time in school history with 1:45.87. He finished third in his heat and 42nd overall in the event.
“Adam was a whole second faster than he was at conference and moved up 18 spots, so if he can do that tomorrow we will be in great shape,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said.
Adam Kalms returned to the Recreation and Wellness Pool the next day to swim in the 200 freestyle. The senior missed out in a spot for the consolation finals and finished the event in 18th place. He swam the event with a time of 1:34.22. It was the second fastest time he has posted for the event.
“I thought he swam a good race, but his last final 50 yards wasn’t as good as we hoped, but he gave a great effort. It was an extremely close race at the finish and he did everything he could to touch the wall first,” coach Tom Johnson said.
The senior swimmer closed out the NCAA Championships with the 100 free style. Kalms came in 34th in the event. He swam the race with a time of 43.38. It was an improvement from his time in last year’s 100 freestyle with a time of 43.74.
“I thought he came out okay and he gave it a good run early, but he didn’t have that second gear that he normally has. I know it’s not how he wanted to end his career, but I’m so proud of his efforts this week,” coach Johnson said.
Adam Kalms closes out his career at UW with five school records and is part of four relay records too. He is a two time All-American honoree in the 200 freestyle. He is one of three Cowboys to make three appearances in the NCAA Championships.
“Adam has raised the expectations of our swimmers and I will be forever grateful of what he has done for this program,” coach Johnson said.
