After much debate ASUW passed Senate Resolution 2454 supporting an off-campus party registration program.
The City of Laramie established the party registration program to reduce noise caused by parties. The program allows party hosts to register their gatherings with local authorities, so any noise complaints or issues with the party can be promptly responded to
“The Party Registration program is intended as an effort of the City of Laramie (City) to reduce the negative consequences of excessive noise often associated with parties in residential neighbourhoods,” Senate Resolution 2454 reads.
ASUW Senator Kadi Cooley, a representative of the College of Arts and Sciences, said the student outreach committee recommended a no vote on the resolution, as students are resistant to provide police with information about gatherings.
“There’s a mistrust between students and police that can be an issue for this program,” Cooley said.
Joe Chenchar, ASUW senator of the College of Law, disagreed with this and said the program would not present negative consequences for students.
“Reading through it, it doesn’t seem that there are any negatives for students,” Chenchar said.
ASUW Senator Sarah Maze of the College of Arts and Sciences said UW’s administration does not seem to support the program.
“The university thinks it’s a liability so they do not want to support it,” Maze said.
For Senator Alex Krysl, a representative of the College of Education, the idea of a trial period for the program is appealing.
“I’m still in favour of this program, let’s try it for a year,” Krysl said.
