Families gathered around the caution tape with children anxious to be released onto the field of brightly colored Easter eggs, then a volunteer yelled, “go!” and kids stormed onto Prexy’s Pasture, eager to grab as many eggs as their baskets could hold.
ASUW’s Easter egg hunt on Saturday brought together volunteers, Laramie families and UW students for an afternoon of holiday fun.
Alaina Gillogly, a volunteer at the Easter egg hunt, said she helped out with the event as a way to give back to kids in the Laramie community.
“I volunteered because I wanted to be with the kids,” Gillogly said. “The kids just make me so happy.”
There were around 20 volunteers, not all from ASUW. One volunteer even dressed up as an Easter bunny and hopped around Prexy’s Pasture with the kids.
The event started off with activities like face painting, hula hooping and frisbee tossing overseen by volunteers. Nattily Schoonhoven, a grandparent of one of the kids participating in the egg hunt, said the event provided a great holiday opportunity for kids that might not otherwise get it.
“I think it’s great because a lot of kids don’t get the opportunity and this gives them the opportunity to see the Easter bunny and enjoy the Easter egg hunt,” Schoonhoven said.
Volunteers started laying out eggs for the kids an hour after the event started. As soon as everyone was gathered around the tape a volunteer with a microphone stated the rules of the egg hunt.
Once the hunt began, parents hurriedly helped their kids pick up eggs before they were all gone. There were different age groups for the hunt, starting with the youngest and working their way up to the oldest.
After the fun of hunting for eggs was all done, kids and parents alike gathered to see what goodies were hidden inside the eggs.
