The Wyoming Cowboys shot an even final round, 288, at the Cowboy Classic to aide the best three round score from the Cowboys this season.
“Moving the tournament to Whirlwind has been terrific,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “The golf course, staff and operations were great, we are very thankful to Troon Golf, Whirlwind Golf Club and Cleveland Golf to be able to host this premium event.”
Leading the 14th place Wyoming was freshman, Drew McCullough. He shot 75, 70 and 70 in his three rounds at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona. His overall score of 215 put him in 33rd place of a 98-golfer field. There was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard between Jared du Toit of Idaho, Robert MacIntyre of McNeese State and Devon Purser of Weber State. Each golfer shot a 207 (-9), which led to a three-way playoff that proved Purser as the individual champion.
“We held our first three person playoff for the championship which was fun. I think the teams and the players it was exciting for and congratulations to Devon Purser and McNeese State for winning the team title,” Jensen added.
The top four golfers for the Cowboys all finished within five strokes of each other. Sophomore Ryan Wallen shot a 218 (+8), freshman Glenn Workman shot a 219 (+9) and junior Kamrin Allen shot a 220 (+10). Rounding out the Cowboy group, freshman Quinton Pope shot a 231 (+21).
“This is a very good field and we are six over par as a team for two rounds, which for this young group is solid playing. We are going to go out tomorrow, play hard and continue to grow as a team,” Jensen said after the second day of the tournament.
The Cowboys next event will be in Provo, Utah for the BYU Cougar Classic starting on April 24.
