Men of the University of Wyoming pranced and posed in the Education Auditorium on Saturday to raise money for The Safe Project, a group that advocates for survivors of stalking and family or sexual violence.
Every spring Kappa Kappa Gamma holds “Mr. Wyoming,” a kind of pageant open to male UW students. In the past Kappa Kappa Gamma has raised up to $4,000 with Mr. Wyoming, and the event seems popular among students.
Ellen Hughes, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, said the event is popular for both UW students and members of the Laramie community.
“Yes, people love this event. Moms even come for girls night,” Hughes said.
To find contestants for Mr. Wyoming, Kappa Kappa Gamma had a sign up sheet in the union for any male student, in a fraternity or not, to sign up for the competition. After sign up, contestants had three weeks to practice their routine before performing.
Kyle Berwick, a competitor said the best part of the event for him was, “raising money for a cause that normally gets overlooked.”
To start off the competition all of the competitors participated in a group dance. Next each contestant was individually introduced to the audience, followed by a talent show. The talent show consisted of a variety of unique talents such as singing, dancing, comedy and synchronized swimming. They finished the evening with interviews. During the interview process the audience was allowed to make their vote and donation for candidates they thought was the Mr. Wyoming.
