This past Friday the University of Wyoming Track and Field team found itself competing to try and show their dominance on the track.
This weekend at the New Mexico Quadrangular two natives of Wyoming proceeded to make new records and once again put Wyoming on the right path for further success in upcoming events and hopefully to the NCAA championships.
Freshman Ricky Faure claimed fifth in Cowboy history in the 800-meters and a personal best with a time of 1:48.87. Faure took third at the meet with his time but reached a good point in his college career to make some good times in order to compete with the other more experienced racers in the Mountain west. But Faure was not the only one for the men to make advances in the outdoor track team; sophomore Jordan Charles took first in two events. Charles finished with a time of 14.35 in the 100-meter hurdles and also a time of 21.74 in the 200 meter.
Senior Kyle Sullivan took first in the high jump with a jump of 6-1 ½, and took third in 110- meter hurdles with a time of 14.87 following senior Colin Herold who took second with a time of 14.47.
Herold also took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.61. Junior Scott Carter also had a good turn out taking first in the triple jump with a jump of 48-6 ¾. Junior Lance Loken took third in the 400 meter with a personal best time of 48.27.
The mens team was not alone with making strides; the women also had a good meet with Wyoming native Erin Kirby running a personal best time of 58.93 in the 400-meter hurdles, which puts her at third best in cowgirl history.
Kirby’s time currently ranks at 18th in the NCAA, but first in the Mountain West for the 400-meter hurdles. Following behind Kirby fellow teammate Hannah Lloyd took second with a time of 1:01.81 that time follows just short of making the top ten times in Wyoming history. Rebecca Harris a freshman took first in the long jump with a personal best jump of 18-0 ½. Junior Sabina Sandberg took first in the high jump with a jump of 5-5 and second in long jump with a jump of 17-9 ¾ for a personal best. The women kept going with sophomore Kerry White crossed the line in the 800 meter with a time of 2:08 which was good enough for first, sophomore teammate Cassidy Meade placed second with a time of 2:11.
“When we go to New Mexico in two weeks we can get some personal bests,” head coach Brian Berryhill said in a previous interview. It finally came to fruition over the weekend.
Track and field now heads to Fort Collins to race at the Jack Christiansen Invite.
