Spring storms resulted in a massive car pile up yesterday on interstate 80. The Highway Patrol reported that approximately 40-50 commercial vehicles and 20 passenger vehicles were involved and several people were taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Bruce Burrows, public affairs specialist at the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said he did not know how severe the injuries were, but there were no fatalities.
I-80 closed following the incidents, which took place in east and westbound lanes. Bruce Burrows, public affairs specialist at the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said accidents in hazardous conditions are “not entirely unexpected.”
Burrows said the wrecks occurred about 15 miles west of Cheyenne, where traffic had piled up in both directions. Authorities attempted to turn people back or determine alternate routes.
Sergeant David Wagener of the Highway Patrol said blizzard conditions were present at the time of the wrecks and that multiple departments responded from Albany and Laramie counties.
