Daredevil
What it is about:
Set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of “The Avengers,” “Daredevil” tells the story of Matt Murdock, attorney at law. Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, was blinded in a car accident as a child. Despite the loss of his sight, Matt is still able to ‘see’ through the combination of his remaining, enhanced senses. Murdock now uses his improved audible and tactile abilities to practice law by day and fight crime in the night.
Why you should watch it:
Opposite Charlie Cox is Vincent D’Onofrio, playing the mysterious and powerful businessman Wilson Fisk. The pure, human portrayals that come from these two outstanding performers is enough already to warrant a binge watch of this Netflix series. When one then factors in the astounding fight scenes, impressively beautiful cinematography and unbelievably gripping story, it becomes apparent that this is one show that should not be missed.
The Double
What it is about:
Despite his best efforts, Simon James, played by Jesse Eisenberg, is incapable of making an impression in his life. His coworkers and superiors disregard him and the woman he loves looks straight through him. Events take an even worse turn when a new employee is hired at Simon’s office–a man that looks exactly like him named James Simon. James Simon, also played by Eisenberg, immediately accomplishes everything and more that Simon James wishes for himself, effectively pushing Simon James out of his own life.
Why you should watch it:
Director Richard Ayoade has done a terrific job adapting Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella to the screen, producing a terrifically Orwellian black comedy that is equal parts hilarious and unsettling. Despite its surrealist nature, “The Double” is surprisingly accessible. The subtlety with which Eisenberg distinguishes his two characters is impressive, preventing viewers from getting too hung up on just how strange the movie is and allowing them to focus more on the genuinely fascinating story.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
What it is about:
Kimmy Schmidt spent the last 15 years of her life in an underground bunker after being forced into a religious doomsday cult. The show follows Kimmy as she tries to regain control of her life after having been rescued from the confines of the bunker. She decides to try and make a life for herself in New York City, but soon finds out that could be easier said than done.
Why you should watch it:
Despite its admittedly dark premise, this Netflix original series is positively hilarious. Ellie Kemper’s innocent portrayal of Kimmy is disarmingly charming and undeniably amusing. In addition, Tina Fey’s role as executive producer definitely leaves its mark, giving the show a very “30 Rock” feel. Fans of “30 Rock,” “Saturday Night Live” and/or “Parks and Recreation” will feel right at home with this new series.
