RSO attempts to break a world record

Cowboy Country Swing Club is in the process of gathering over 756 people to swing dance at one time to break a world record.

The CCSC will be attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the largest country swing dance.

Hunter Perala, a senior kinesiology student and the president of CCSC, is looking forward to what breaking a record would mean not only for CCSC, but for the university as well.

“This will be an accomplishment for both CCSC and the university,” Perala said. “It will show prospective students that come to UW that our RSOs don’t mess around. It will show that the university offers a way for students to take what they love and make it to everything they can. CCSC is the first RSO in UW history to try to break a world record and breaking it would be a huge pat on the back for everyone involved in planning and coordinating the event.”

CCSC has put on regular dances throughout the year every Thursday normally in the Union and looks to have their biggest turnout to date with the attempted breaking of this record.

Currently the Guinness Book of World Record holder for the largest country swing dance is Grand Rapids Swing Society with an attendance of 756 people. The record was set Aug. 7, 2012 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, according to the Guinness Book of World Record. To break the world record there is a specific five minute dance that everyone will have to do.

CCSC has been proactive in advertising for this event. Katya Larson, a junior secondary education and social studies major and marketing coordinator for the RSO, has worked with various sources to help get the word out.

“Our main marketing strategy has been our Facebook event page, CCSC is Breaking the Guinness World Record,” Larson said. “We have posters all over campus, we are going to put advertisements in the napkin holders in Washakie and the Union, some of the local radio stations are going to run segments on this, we’ve had tons of news articles sent across the state, we will be doing breezeway tables and dancing in the Skylight Lounge during the week of the event, and lots more. The main push is to get people aware and then remind them up until the event.”

This information has been circulating around campus and the town of Laramie and has the public excited the event. Students such as Andrew Cobb a junior mechanical engineering is ready for the event.

“I am stoked for it,” Cobb said. “It will mean that we have a large enough impact that we can rally over 756 people to dance at the same time, as well as putting our name further out there. It makes UW’s different and it gives people a safe place to learn to dance in a way that is not common in the U.S.”

The event will be held on April 30 in the UW Memorial Field house. The Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band will be performing at the event. Check in begins at 7:30 p.m. and the start of the world record break will be at 8 p.m.
