The Wyoming Cowboys football team held their spring football game this past Saturday, where the Brown team beat the Gold team by a score of 24-21.
The football squad was split up into two teams. The Brown team had the Pokes No. 1 defense and the Gold had the No. 1 offense. Defensive coordinator Steve Stanard was in charge of the Brown team and offensive coordinator Brent Vigen ran the Gold team.
The Gold team had a chance at the end of the game to win it, but could not prevail. Senior quarterback Cameron Coffman was able to drive the Gold team 74 yards down the field in the final minutes of the game. It came down to a fourth down play that had the quarterback’s throw go through the back of the end zone with :06 remaining in the game.
Coffman finished the game 14-20 passing with 172 yards. He threw an interception early in the game, but was able to rebound with a 54 yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Jacob Hollister in the second quarter.
“We just wanted to go out here and have fun. You know, we’ve been working out here for 14 practices before this, and I have just been focusing on getting a little bit better every day and I think I have. Today was just about coming out here, having fun and playing football,” Coffman said.
With senior running back Shaun Wick not able to play in the game, sophomore Brian Hill got to be the starter for the Gold team. Hill carried the 13 times for 92 yards and a touchdown. He also had two catches for seven yards receiving.
Hill had some goals that he hoped to accomplish not only for himself but for the team as well.
“I wanted a 100 yards rushing and a touchdown. I wanted to win the game so bad. That was the biggest goal. We were talking all yesterday, talking trash to each other,” Hill said.
Sophomore quarterback Josh Allen was the starter for the brown team. Allen was able to lead his team to victory by going 10-13 passing with 117 yards and two touchdowns. He was able to use his legs as well with 42 yards on the ground.
“In the huddle the guys were very attentive to me and that is just a boost of confidence as a quarterback when the guys are all paying attention to you. We went out there and we executed the way we wanted to do,” Allen said.
Head coach Craig Bohl thought that the spring game had its ups and downs, but overall liked what he saw out of his team.
“”We look more confident. We look more like a program. There is more of a stamp of how we want to play. We’re certainly not there yet, but it is another step forward,” coach Bohl said.
