Two UW students face burglary charges after allegedly stealing a 60-inch Vizio flat screen TV from a former roommate.
James Jennings, a UW senior working toward a triple major, is suspected of entering his former residence and taking the TV, according to court documents.
According to the affidavit, “the Defendant had previously been evicted and warned of trespassing from that residence.”
The victim immediately suspected Jennings and called the police.
Patrol officer Jeff Coca contacted Jennings, who consented to a search of 1708 Rainbow Avenue where he was storing his belongings for the summer. He also consented to a search of 1301 East Harney Apt. 3, where he was staying.
According to the affidavit, “the entire apartment was searched with the exception of a bedroom that belonged to Kennedy Koch [sic], another tenant.”
Koch, the other UW student facing burglary charges, just completed his freshman year as a chemical engineering major.
The day after the search, two other residents of the Harney address contacted Coca and said the stolen TV had been in the unsearched bedroom. The two residents, who were present when Jennings and Koch stole the TV, also said the TV was moved to 1708 Rainbow after the search of 1301 East Harney Apt. 3 was completed.
Police found the TV at the Rainbow address, where Jennings had an arrangement with a resident to store the TV for the summer.
The two defendants’ preliminary hearing will be June 16 at 3 p.m. If convicted they could face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of $10,000 or both.
