The university introduced new recycling bins Monday, replacing old bins and introducing them in new locations, including the Buchanan Performing Arts Center.
Jim Goodman, UW recycling supervisor, said the new bins will be more uniform and eye pleasing, and that this process “will promote recycling ultimately.”
This recycling plan is in the midst of “Phase One,” which includes 45 new recycling cabinets and 450 new recycling bins. The project includes workers from the recycling crew, students and the moving crew. While there is not a planned “Phase Two” yet, Custodial Services Manager Tod Scott said there is a budget crunch in regards to recycling, so once more money comes, the plan can move forward until it is complete. As for the coverage of campus after Phase One, Scott said “we’re well more than half way I believe.”
Scott said they are improving the efficiency of recycling on campus by having more central locations. Generally, there will be one place to recycle on each floor of a building.
“If these new bins work well, we might expand where we would put them,” Scott said.
The new bins will have three sections of recycling: paper, bottles/cans, and waste, according to a UW press release.
The long term effect of this, Goodman said, is that bigger and more convenient bins and cabinets will encourage people to recycle, instead of wandering around wondering whether a receptacle was for trash or recycling.
