Trustees select search committees

The board of trustees chose members of the university community to serve on two committees aimed at thinning the presidential candidate pool.

It’s the next step on the lengthy path to finding UW’s next president—a path that’s designed to be more open than the last presidential search, which was closed to most input.

“I think they’ll do a good job,” Dave Palmerlee, president of the board, said. “The faculty committee members were selected from recommendations from the faculty senate chair, students from recommendations from ASUW and staff members from recommendations by the staff senate chair with one or two minor exceptions.”

The first committee will review applications gathered by a yet-to-be-determined search firm and select 10 to 15 candidates. The second committee will narrow that list down to five or fewer.

“We’re happy with the committees and with the structure of the search so far,” Brian Schueler, ASUW president, said. “I’m happy with the way the committee looks, and I think they’re going to do a great job.”

Schueler, who sent recommendations for student committee members to the board, said ASUW would be involved again later in the timeline when candidates are selected by the committees and announced by the board.

“ASUW as a whole is very interested in this process,” he said. “I’m impressed with the amount of student opinion that’s really taken to heart.”

Faculty Senate Chair Tucker Readdy said he is grateful for the increased inclusion during this search and approves of the faculty members chosen to sit on the search committees.

“I’m very happy to see the four names on that list,” he said. “I’m excited to get this process underway after all the planning.”
