Cowgirl soccer improved their conference record to 3-3-1 with a 2-1 win over the UNLV Rebels Friday at Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Cowgirls overall are 7-4-4.
“I thought we had a slow start to the game,” Cowgirls head coach Pete Cuadrado told gowyo.com Friday. “The team managed some halftime adjustments very well and picked up the tempo in the second half. It was great to get a win on the road, which is not easy to do in this conference.”
UNLV took the first advantage of the match, scoring in the 21st minute. Rebel’s sophomore defender Chidera Akubuilo had a header into goal off of an assist from junior midfielder Jordan Magnin with the corner kick.
The Rebels outshot the Cowgirls 13-8 in the first half and went into the locker rooms with a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree had five saves in the first half, totaling to 31 saves for the season in 15 games played.
The Cowgirls hit the ground running in the second half and leveled the scoreboard three minutes after returning to the field. Sophomore defender Alisha Bass worked her way in front of the net and kicked one back past Rebel sophomore goalie Jesse Clark. Junior forward Laurel Ramer was credited with the assist with a pass across the box.
Cowgirls sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri made her 8th goal of the season and gave the Cowgirls the lead in the 68th minute. Freshman defender Taylor Burton found Ashouri across the field giving Ashouri a shot in the box.
The second half concluded with two unanswered goals from Wyoming giving the Cowgirls their third conference win of the season.
The Rebels edged out the Cowgirls once again in number of shots 6-8.
Leading in shots for Wyoming was Ashouri with six shots total, three shots on goal. Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes had two shots on goal for the Cowgirls. Junior defender Sammi Dunda, junior forward Laurel Ramer, freshman forward Jesse Gentle, sophomore midfielder Summer Halle, freshman defender Alyssa Murray and Bass all tallied one shot as well.
Despite being outshot overall 21-14, over half of the Cowgirl’s shots were shots on goal having 8 to the Rebels 9 out of 21.
Redshirt freshman keeper Cassidy Entsminger had three saves in the second half. Collectively Entsminger and Rowntree have eight saves against the Rebels offense.
Rebels keeper Clark had six saves for the night.
