Cowgirl soccer notched their eighth shutout of the season with a win over Boise State Broncos Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The 1-0 victory broke Wyoming’s single season record in shutout games.
Junior center midfielder Mandy Meyer scored the game winning goal for Wyoming in the second half giving the Cowgirls the 1-0 win. It was Meyer’s first goal of the season and second goal as a Cowgirl.
“It felt amazing, I was so stoked to have the opportunity to help the team in a way that we really needed,” Meyer said. “I just wanted to execute the game plan and just really work for my team. Anything we can do to put the ball in the back of the net.”
Meyer’s goal came in the 52nd minute and was a put-back from 18 yards out, off a shot saved by the Broncos goalie, to the left side of the goal.
The Cowgirls lead the Broncos in shots 18-9, with 10 in the first half and eight in the second. Wyoming had eight Cowgirls in the shot column out of their starting eleven. Leading the Cowgirls in shots was junior forward Laurel Ramer with four shots and two on goal. Ramer now tallies 23 shots for the season.
Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes totaled three shots, two on goal for Wyoming.
Sophomore forward/midfielder Alisha Bass, junior defender Sammi Dunda and freshman defender Alyssa Murray each had two shots on goal.
With one shot each for the Cowgirls was freshman defender Taylor Burton, junior defender Katie Marcheso and sophomore midfielder Summer Halle.
The Cowgirls allowed the Broncos only four shots on goal.
Boise State had one corner kick opportunity each half. Boise State’s kick late in the second half was kicked around in front of the goal but was eventually cleared by Wyoming defense and proved unsuccessful for the Broncos.
Wyoming freshman goalkeeper Cassidy Entsminger played the entire 90-minute match and tallied four saves in her lone shutout, two in each half.
“It was great to get a shutout,” Entsminger said. “The defense made it so great they made so many saves.”
Broncos sophomore goalkeeper Janelle Flores, under heavy fire from the Cowgirls seven shots on goal, had six saves. Flores made her return against Wyoming after missing five games following an injury.
The Cowgirls are in the hunt looking for the sixth slot in the Mountain West Championships that will be in San Diego, California, Nov. 3-7.
“We just want to get another win so we’re placed in a better position for the Mountain West Conference” Meyer said.
