The Cowgirls finished an average season last year where they finished 16-14 overall and 10-8 in the Mountain West. While they were solid at home, they struggled on the road last season and ended the season at 5-7.
The Cowgirl basketball program lost three starters after last season; Kaitlyn Mileto, Jordan Sibrel and Kayla Woodward. Combined, they were worth an average of 30.2 points per game.
But the Cowgirls have several seniors returning to the team, and they are going to need it as they lost three starters after last season and 11 players of 15 are underclassmen.
Marquelle Dent, the Cowgirl’s offensive powerhouse who averages 17.7 points per game and six assists per game is returning to the team as a senior. Jordan Kelley is joining her, who averages 7.1 rebounds per game.
The Cowgirls are going to be working with an incredibly young team this year, as mentioned, only 4 players will be upperclassmen. There will be five sophomores and UW will be welcoming six new freshmen.
The recruitment scoured the earth for recruits, and found highly anticipated players from Greece, Spain and Finland
The Cowgirl’s first major contest will come on December 3 when they take on Gonzaga in Spokane.
The UW Cowgirl basketball team opened their season last night with their game against the Adams State Grizzlies. At the time of printing, the outcome of that game was unknown.
On the men’s side, the team that brought Wyoming a Mountain West championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament has lost all of its starters. Except for Josh Adams.
Adams averages 12.8 points per game and will be a pivotal part of the Wyoming offence and defense and will be the only senior this year.
The other old hand who will be joining Adams is junior Jason McManamen. Last year, McManamen played in every single game for the Cowboys and in a couple games put up double-digit points.
The Cowboy basketball team is also going to be a fairly young team this year with six sophomores and six freshmen. But the Cowboys will have six lettermen returning to help balance the lack of experience.
Larry Shyatt has expressed that there may be as many as 10 or 11 players in the rotation, which will give the new comers and underclassmen a chance to prove themselves on the court. So be looking for some new players to start trying to make big impacts for the team.
But the Cowboys will also need their returning players like Alexander Aka Gorski, Alan Herndon, Jonathan Barnes and Trey Washington III.
The former three made regular appearances during the Cowboy’s championship season. In this upcoming season, Shyatt will likely look to them to comprise his core group of players.
The new dynamics with this team will be something to look out for as the season progresses. With so many new faces, Shyatt will be quite flexible in his ability to mold and develop this team.
