I don’t know about you guys, but I am pretty excited that basketball season is back. I have missed covering games, and watching Josh Adams destroy a basketball rim.
Saturday is not only the first time that Cowboy nation gets to watch the 2015-16 squad for the first time this season, but gets to see the Mountain West Championship banner raised.
If you have been living under a rock for the past eight months, then you probably don’t know that the Wyoming basketball team from last year went all the way, and won the Mountain West. This was Wyoming’s first MW championship win in any sport. The win also allowed Wyoming to advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002.
The banner being raised needs to be recognized, and let the team from last year know that their accomplishments from last year will not be forgot. Saturday is meant to be a day of celebration, to give one last “WHOOP WHOOP” for the UW team of last year.
“Compared to the hope that I have that a lot of our athletes have at Wyoming, a lot of our students at Wyoming, a lot of our fans that love Wyoming, who have dreamed of Mountain West Championships, can come because there is and there is not a really important time to celebrate championships,” Shyatt said.
Seriously, Wyoming fans rarely get to see banners being raised into the rafters, let alone a championship banner. Head coach Larry Shyatt has expressed many times that he wants to share this moment with as many fans of UW as possible.
Wyoming fans have not had a whole lot cheer about this season. The football team is having an awful season and not to mention the state is not having a great year either. We are in the middle of the school year, Halloween passed and Thanksgiving seems so far away.
“I am doing it because the game does not count, so it can be a night of celebration. With the great fans of this great state I really look forward to a packed house to celebrate the only Wyoming championship in the history of the Mountain West” Shyatt said.
The game is an exhibition game meaning even if the Pokes lose the game does not count. Saturday will give us the first opportunity all year to show up to a game and not worry about the outcome. All the students and fans off UW have to do is show up and cheer.
Hear Shyatt’s creed and my creed Cowboy fans, come to the Arena-Auditorium at 7 p.m. and party like it is March of 2015.
