Football Commentary: Drenched in San Diego defense

Aided only by a late Tristan Bailey field goal, the Wyoming Cowboys failed on multiple accounts to move the ball against the San Diego Aztecs, and more importantly, failed to steal a win.

“San Diego State is a very good football team,” head coach Craig Bohl said. “I felt like they wore us down a little bit as the game went on. They are a veteran, physical football team, and their maturity showed tonight. They have a big offensive line, talented running backs and a very aggressive defense.”

Bohl has rattled off this line more than once this year, and he is never wrong on this account. Each game this year, Wyoming’s opponent ends up being the more physical team. The more experienced team. They are the team with better players.

Craig Bohl’s record this year: 1-10. Craig Bohl’s record in his time at Wyoming: 5-18.

When will that script flip?

After the buy week, the Cowboys will be hosting Senior Day at War Memorial Stadium. Seniors will be recognized one-by-one. All eight of them.

This team remains extremely young and inexperienced, yes. But, they have nearly an entire season under their belts at this point. They are by no means seasoned, but certainly primed. After peaking against Nevada before Halloween, this team has fallen off the map.

That same fight-till-the-end mentality does not seem to exist anymore. During the ongoing four game losing streak, the Cowboys have been outscored 156-51. Being outscored by an average of just over 25 points over the course of four games is rooted much deeper than just a very young team.

“I thought our guys continued to fight, but I did see us get worn down tonight,” Bohl said.

No one honestly expected Wyoming to steal a win against the prohibited favorites against the Mountain West championship. Nobody honestly expects Wyoming to win another game this year, as they will likely open as underdogs against the UNLV Rebels. Wyoming likely will not beat a UNLV team that has found some success through the air this year, but boasts only a 3-7 record.

The Cowboys continue to star in the same old screenplay week after week. Maybe director Craig Bohl can add a twist right at the end of the season, springing hope for the 2016 football season.

News and Notes:

1) Senior quarterback Cam Coffman played against the Aztecs, and went 9-for-21 with 129 yards. Coffman was also sacked five times.
2) Senior Eddie Yarbrough recorded his 37th tackle for a loss, a Wyoming record.
3) Brian Hill continues his extraordinary season, and career. Hill is already sixth all-time in rushing yards at UW with 2,195 career yards.
4) The UNLV game will kick off at noon on Saturday, Nov. 28 at War Memorial Stadium. In consequence, the basketball game that day will tip at 6 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 7 p.m.
