Cowgirls leash the Bulldogs

The Wyoming Cowgirls took down the Fresno State Bulldogs Wednesday evening at the Save Mart Center in Fresno California in four sets.

With this win, the Cowgirls move to 22-6 on the season and 12-4 in the Mountain West. The Bulldogs will fall to 14-16 on the year and 6-10 in the Mountain West.

The Cowgirls dropped the first set 18-25, but rallied for the next three sets winning 25-22, 29-27 and 25-20.

In the first set, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early five-point lead and were able to maintain that buffer for most of the set. In the second set, the Cowgirls were able to extend to leads up to five, but the Bulldogs kept the match incredibly close.

The third set was a battle to find a winner and required a number of extra points. In the fourth the set was fairly close but the Cowgirls were able to pull out the win to end the match in four sets.

Freshman Reed Copeland led the Cowgirl offense with 15.5 points as well as taking part in 13 blocks. Laura Beach also was a force offensively and put down 14 points.

Courtney Chacon led the help for the hitters and was able to provide 25 assists for the Cowgirl’s offense as well as picking up 14 digs. Cori Aafedt followed close behind Chacon with 18 assists.

Allison Waldvogel was solid defensively and was able to scoop up 19 digs for the Cowgirls. Kayla Slofkiss was also a major help defensively with 13 digs and was also able to put away 13.5 points.

Carly Scarbrough led the Bulldog offense with 19.5 points on the night. Sabrina Winslow also chipped in with the offensive effort and contributed 12.5 points.

Maggie Eppright was a mainstay for the Bulldog defense and picked up 25 digs. Zana Bowens was close behind with 19 digs as well as scoring 10 points.

Brook Legaux was able to pitch in for the offense and provided 29 assists for her offensive line. Jelena Jovanovic was able to give her hitters 21 assists.

The Cowgirls were able to dominate the Bulldogs at the net and had 17 blocks to the Bulldog’s seven. But the Cowgirl hitting rates were also vastly superior to the Bulldogs; the Cowgirls were able to hit at just under 25 percent, compared to the Bulldog’s 18 percent.

The Cowgirls next contest will be Saturday when they take on UNLV at the UniWyo Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
