The new science, technology, engineering and mathematics facility is nearing completion and is expected to be open by the start of the spring semester.
The three main floors of the facility will be broken up between physics and astronomy, life sciences, chemistry and math. When designing the interior space, the focus was mainly on creating a great deal of modular and divisional space for classroom and student use.
Steve Salmans, the STEM facility coordinator, said the new building is about blurring the line between lab and lecture, as well as offering a comfortable work space for students.
“The purpose of this building is to centralize the undergraduate teaching laboratories for many of the STEM disciplines,” Salmans said. “This is analogous to what the classroom building is for lectures in those disciplines, this is for the lab components of those undergraduate classes.”
Even though the building will be ready for classes by spring, the organic chemistry department will wait another semester to fully move into the new building, as its equipment requires more time to transport than the available time over winter break.
