ASUW’s First Meeting of the 2016 Spring Semester

The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW) had the first meeting for the Spring 2016 semester Tuesday, Jan. 26.

 

One of the first orders of business was swearing in Isaac Wentz, a new senator for the College of Health and Sciences.

 

Two registered student organizations (RSO’s) were granted funds for their upcoming cultural events.

 

First, the Chinese Spring Festival was granted $10,395 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. A representative for the festival spoke to the senate. He explained the Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China. Celebrating at the university is a way to promote friendship and share the tradition.

 

Second, a motion passed to grant African Awareness Week funds for $8,761.39. African Awareness Week is an entire week of activities and education, with cultural displays that celebrate Africa.

 

A motion passed to approve Ricardo Lind-Gonzalez as the 2016 Election Commissioner.

 

Approval of the Judicial Council’s revised rules and procedures was passed. Two revisions were passed. First, if a hearing is required the Chief Justice will notify the parties of the hearing date, time and location at least three academic days in advance of the hearing, previously it was five days in advance. The second revision clarifies that the accusing party must provide evidence, and the judicial council will not provide the evidence.

 

The ASUW Freshman Senate is awarding five textbook scholarships of $200 to any UW student. Applications are open. Applications close Monday, Feb. 22, 2016 at 8 a.m. For more information please contact asuwgov@uwyo.edu.
