ASUW was updated on the status of the new gym by Pat Moran, Half Acre director, at Tuesday night’s meeting.

“Guess how many card swipes we got yesterday? 2,397,” Moran said.

Moran recognized ASUW in their role to making Half Acre the achievement he said it has become.

At Half Acre the multiple programs are all successful, Moran said. Open recreation offers 60 classes a week. Indoor practice facilities have seen an increase in popularity for drop-in soccer.

The Outdoor Program, a component of Half Acre, hosts the climbing wall, snowshoe tours, avalanche classes and a Snowy Range ski bus. If students take the bus they qualify for a $10 discount off a lift ticket or rental.

“If you haven’t done anything in the beautiful Wyoming winter I recommend it,” Moran said.

Moran said over 500 students participate in club sports.

The new Wellness Center provides nutrition information, cooking demonstrations, stress management, athletic trainers and soon a massage therapist. Occasionally dog therapy is offered.

“We had a line for the dogs before it even started,” Moran said. “We have full time employees and over 300 student employees I’m so proud of. I encourage you to get some recreation and exercise fit into your day.”

Other items discusses at the meeting include:

  • A motion passed to approve $1,125 of funding to Hillel at UW’s Anti Defamation League Workshop. Abigail Cohen, representative from the group, explained the workshop will promote and train against defamation, bigotry, micro-aggression and hate speech.

“The workshop will show and initiate action to prevent these things,” Cohen said.

  • Senate Resolution #2486: ASUW Implementation of an Instant-Runoff Voting

Trial was switched to a Senate Bill #2486. The bill was taken to committee of the whole. The committee recommended a fur-do pass. When the senate voted it did not pass. The vote was 15 negative and ten positive.

Senator Chris Ellbogen authored the bill. The bill would implement what is known as an “instant runoff voting” for spring 2016 ASUW elections.

This bill would trial for one year and expire next year year, unless next year’s senate voted to continue it.

“In my experience at UW students feel very harassed to vote twice in both the Primary and General ASUW Elections,” Ellbogen said. “With IRV students vote one time instead of two. I believe one election instead of a primary and general would be a more efficient use of our resources.”
