Yesterday’s faculty senate meeting was comprised with final addresses from UW President Dick McGinty, Vice President of Academic Affairs David Jones and ASUW President Brian Schueler, as well as the passing of the position of faculty chair from Tucker Readdy to Scott Shaw.

McGinity spoke before the faculty, expressing his gratitude to the faculty for his time spent in office. He then went to share excerpts from letters from the governor and the chief of staff about further budgetary concerns.

“As we look into the future, the challenges just keep growing,” McGinity said. “It’s going to take a lot of work on all of our parts… I’m sad to be leaving office with this coming down the tracks at us.”

McGinity is not retiring completely and will continue to work to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible between himself and forthcoming president Laurie Nichols.

Jones also gave his farewell to the faculty.

“This university has been through quite a bit in the last three years,” Jones said, “and I know that has been met with lots of frustration and angst in this time, but I also want to thank the faculty for your patience as we’ve been trying to find our way through the last few years. ”

Schueler gave his final address to faculty senate as ASUW president. He emphasized the importance of the plus/minus grading concerns that have been brought up in recent years and wished for the same cooperation students and faculty have shared.

“There’s a lot of difficulty and change coming ahead. I was hoping my last words to this senate would be that students and faculty work together during these difficult times,” Schueler said. “We all have a lot of shared goals in terms of we all want to have a quality education and as these difficult times do come forward we’ll do better with more communication between faculty and students on these important issues.”

Faculty senate bill 338, which will expand the faculty dispute resolution panel to include all academic professionals and personnel to dispute resolutions and sit on the panel, was also passed during the meeting.
