Cowgirls dominate Fighting Hawks in Lincoln

The Cowgirl tennis team (4-2 overall) closed out the weekend with a 7-0 victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (1-4 overall) on Sunday morning at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Cowgirls got off to a very hot start on the day and never looked back as they won every match in doubles and singles competition.

“I feel we are growing as a team,” head coach Dean Clower said. “We rebounded well after a tough match yesterday (Saturday) and played very structured and tough tennis. The ladies will get a well-deserved day off tomorrow before we set our sights on Montana State.”

To begin the day, Elisa Koonik/Tessa can Der Ploeg for UW took on Preethi Kasilingam/Faith Lee of UND and beat them in straight sets, 6-0. The second doubles match of the day was Dorottya Jones/Ana Tkachenko of UW defeated Ella Hassall/Sophie Allen-Fisher of UND, 6-3. At the number three spot, Imogen Clews/ Milka Genkova of UW defeated Mimi Yunker/Alex Revenig of UND, 6-2. With those three wins to start off the day, the Cowgirls went up on North Dakota 1-0.

The doubles momentum carried over to singles play with the Cowgirls winning all six of their matches. In the first match for singles play at the number one spot, Jonas defeated Hassall in straight sets in the first game. Things got a little tighter in the second, but Jonas held on for the win, 6-4, to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.

Der Ploeg defeated Yunker in two straight games, 6-2, 6-1. In the third singles match of the day Genkova was in a tight game with Kasilingam in the first set, but ended up taking the first set 7-5. In the second game, it wasn’t as close as Genkova won 6-3. In the fourth game, Koonnik defeated Lee in straight sets in the first game and won 6-2 the second game.

In the last two games of the day, the Cowgirls dominated. Tkachenko defeated Revenig 6-1 in the first game and won in straight sets in the second game. In the last match of the day, Clews defeated Alysse Nakasato 6-2, 6-1.

Wyoming will host its first match of the spring on Saturday. The Cowgirls will welcome the Montana State Bobcats beginning at 1 p.m. at the UW Indoor Tennis Complex.
