Cowgirl tennis sweeps Miners, 4-0

The Cowgirl tennis team (6-2 overall) won its third straight match with a 4-0 victory over the UTEP Miners (2-7 overall) on Saturday morning.

“I can’t point out one outstanding performance from one person because this was a total team victory,” head coach Dean Clower said. “The team was ready to go from the first point of the match.”

Wyoming jumped out to a 1-0 early lead by taking two of three matches. The duo of Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert defeated UTEP’s Daphna Visscher and Raven Bennett, 6-2. The next doubles match was Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko defeating Duda Santos and Lois Wagenvoort, 6-4. The final doubles match of the day at the number one spot was UW’s Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg took on Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz. The Cowgirls duo was up 3-2 but weren’t able to finish the match.

Momentum carried over to singles play with the Cowgirls only needing three wins to take the match overall. Van Der Ploeg won easily over Santos winning 6-2 in the first set and 6-3 in the second. Next, Jonas defeated Pietersz in straight sets in the first set, 6-0, and won 6-2 in the second set. At the number three spot, Milka Genkova wrapped up the match for the Cowgirls defeating Visscher 6-2, 6-3.

“Thanks again for the support from the crowd, making this one of the toughest places to play,” Clower said. “The ladies will get a well-deserved day off tomorrow and enjoy this victory.”

Wyoming will return to action Saturday afternoon, as they will take on the Northern Colorado Bears beginning at 1 p.m. in Greeley, Colorado.
