Cowgirls dominate 7-0 over Aggies

The Cowgirl tennis team (12-3 overall) won its third straight match with a 7-0 victory against the New Mexico State Aggies on Thursday afternoon.

With a 7-0 win at home, it’s the most single-season home wins in program history. The previous mark was give, which was set during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

“We got the job in doubles and earned the point,” head coach Dean Clower said. “We have some areas to clean up in that part of our game, which is usually our specialty.”

In doubles action, it was a battle with the Cowgirls taking two of three matches. The number one team of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg won 6-4 over Rebecca Keijzerwaard and Vanessa Valdez followed by Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko needed the tiebreaker to come away with a 7-6 (7-1) win over Rimpledeep Kaur and Marie-Pier Thiffault. At the number three spot, Magdalena Stencel and Miranda Talbert dropped a close one, 7-5, against Lindsay Harlas and Gabrielle Joyce.

After picking up the point, in doubles, the Cowgirls dominated the singles matches. They didn’t lose a single set in the singles matches. van Der Ploeg defeated Keijzerwaard, 6-3, 6-2. Stencel won the opening set 6-2 over Kaur but fell behind 3-0 in the second set. She would storm back winning the next six games to win the set 6-3. Jonas battled but came out on top over Valdez, 6-4, 6-2 followed by Koonik winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, against Eli Arnaudova. The Cowgirls closed out the match with wins by Milka Genkova, 6-0, 6-4, over Thiffault. Then in the last match of the afternoon, Tkachenko defeated Harlas, 6-4, 6-0.

“In singles, I thought we were pretty disciplined and player has a solid record, so Magdalena (Stencel) did a solid job executing the game plan,” Clower said. “Again, the freshmen are holding the bottom of the line-up, doing some good things. We are just tough to beat in any spot of our line-up because of our depth. There just aren’t any holes.”

Wyoming will return to action next week on the road as it begins conference play. The Cowgirls will face the Utah State Aggies on Friday, March 31, and the Boise State Broncos on Sunday, April 2. Both matches are set for 11 a.m. in Logan, Utah and Boise, Idaho respectively.
