After recording the second lowest score of any team on the final day of the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Oregon, the Cowboys golf team finished in a tie with the University of Denver for seventh place out of the 15 team field.
Playing amongst some of the best collegiate golfers in the country, junior Drew McCullough shot the best round in the field on March 28, recording a 68 (-3) that brought him to an even par 213 for the tourney. That score was good enough to tie for seventh place with Kevin Murphy of Oregon State and Ethan Marcus of Arizona.
“Today we looked really solid,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “We just have to continue to build and keep getting better. We’ll have some tough rounds and some great rounds, but today we worked hard and I’m pleased.”
Junior Glenn Workman shot an even par 71 on the final day of the tournament, making him one of 15 players of the 87 competitors who shot par or better in the final round. With a birdie on the final hole, Workman jumped 13 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 23rd.
Fellow junior Quintin Pope also played his best round of the tournament on the final day, shooting a 74 (+3) as the Cowboys recorded a 289 (+5) as a team for the day, their lowest score of the tournament by six strokes.
The Pokes played two rounds the first day of the tournament, recording a 297 on the first 18 and 295 on the last for a team score of 592 (+24) after the first day, which was good enough for ninth place. Workman and sophomore John Murdock led the Cowboys in the first round with scores of 72 (+1) and 74 (+3), respectively.
McCullough and senior Ryan Wallen led the team in the second round with scores of 70 (-1) and 73 (+2) respectively. McCullough was the only Cowboy golfer to shoot under par in any round of the tournament.
“I want to build throughout the second half of the spring season and today was the start of that. We’re in a good position for the final round,” Jensen said after the first day.
The Pokes will continue their West Coast road trip with a quick turn around, playing in The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, on March 30.
