The Wyoming men’s golf team concluded their three-day tournament at the Stanford Golf Course on April 1, finishing in a tie for 14th place out of 24 teams with an overall score of 883 (+43).
Senior Ryan Wallen and junior Drew McCullough tied for 13th as the Cowboys’ top individual finishers.
The Pokes recorded rounds of 294 (+14) and 293 (+13) on Thursday and Friday, finishing day two in a tie for sixth place before a final round 296 (+16) sunk the Cowboys to 14th place.
“We’re hanging in there in a tough tournament,” head coach Joe Jensen said after day two. “Everyone is playing hard and their attitudes are solid. Part of it is keeping your head up when you make mistakes and we’ve done that so far. This is a fun tournament because the field is so talented. We’ll come out swinging hard tomorrow and see what happens.”
McCullough and Wallen both shot 73 (+3) on the final day to finish the weekend at 214 (+4) overall. The duo finished ahead of seven golfers currently in the NCAA top 50, and tied with Oregon’s Wyndham Clark, who is currently ranked the number one golfer in the nation.
Junior Glenn Workman and sophomore John Murdock both recorded a score of 75 (+5) on the final day, with Murdock finishing in a tie for 93rd after a three day score of 228 (+18). Workman finished in a tie for 114th after recording a 232 (+22). Junior Quintin Pope recorded an 80 (+10) on the final day to finish in a tie for 116th at 233 (+23).
McCullough recorded a one under 69 on the first day, which put him in a tie for seventh after one round. He shot 10 under on par 5 holes for the tournament, which was the best of any individual. He was also one of only two players to record three eagles over the weekend.
Stanford led the tourney throughout on their home course, finishing in first with a three round score of 837 (-3). Southern California, UNLV, Oregon and Washington rounded out the top five.
Rhett Rasmussen of BYU took home the individual crown with a three round score of 206 (-4.) Franklin Huang of Stanford and Harry Hall of UNLV tied for second.
The Pokes will return to action on April 10 at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona, as they will host the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
