Track & Field shines in Greeley

Seniors Jordan Charles and Scott Carter led a select group of Wyoming track & field athletes at the Tom Benich Invitational on April 2 in Greeley, Colorado.

Carter continued his hot streak as he picked up another win in the men’s triple jump, posting a jump of 52 feet, 1 inch, which was a new personal record. The leap moved him from number six to number three in UW’s all-time record book.

“Scott (Carter)’s performance has been a long time coming,” Wyoming jumping coach Quincy Howe said. “He has been consistently good over the past two seasons, and the 52-foot barrier is a great landmark on the road to bigger and better things.”

Charles recorded a time of 13.92 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, which was more than a half second faster than any other collegiate runner. The senior finished second to former Southern California standout and Cheyenne native Brendan Ames, who was running unattached.

Junior Damon Unland took home the victory in the men’s hammer throw, winning the event for the second straight meet. His throw of 191 feet, 6 inches gave him the victory by over six feet. Freshman Hap Frketich took ninth in the hammer with a throw of 160 feet, 2 inches.

Unland also took fourth in the discus with a toss of 158 feet, 9 inches, while Frketich took second place in the javelin with a throw of 177 feet, 10 inches. Sophomore Martin Fitzwater earned fourth place in the men’s shot put by tossing 51 feet, 10.5 inches.

Junior Hannah Carr took third in the women’s shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 9.5 inches, while also taking third in the discus with a toss of 159 feet, 8 inches, which put her in a tie for eighth on the UW all-time list.

Emelda Malm-Annan recorded a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 190 feet, 5 inches, good enough for eighth all-time for UW. She took fourth place in the event.

“With the fact that we are in a heavy training phase and the training was a bit thrown off this week due to the meet date change, I thought it was a productive meet overall leading into the CU meet next week,” UW throws coach Paul Barrett said.

Junior Clare Nicholas placed ninth in the women’s long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 11.5 inches, while classmate Day Timberman took sixth in the women’s triple jump at 35 feet, 11.25 inches.

The Pokes will be back in action April 7-8 in Boulder for the CU Invite.
