Sophomore Jerayah Davis broke the Wyoming school record in the women’s 100 meters and senior Jordan Charles tied the UW record in the men’s 110 meter hurdles at the Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, California.
The Cowboys scored 78 points, good for first in a field of 24 teams, while the women recorded 51.5 points to take fifth out of 24 teams.
“It was great for Jerayah to be the fastest Cowgirl to ever run the 100 meters,” head coach Bryan Berryhill said. “I’m just really proud of her and the progress she’s made in the two years she’s been at Wyoming.”
Davis ran a time of 11.42 seconds in the 100 meters to break the team record of 11.50 previously set by Kereston Thomas in 2014. Davis won the event by over four tenths of a second.
Charles’ time of 13.81 in the 110 hurdles was enough to take home a victory, as well as move into a tie with Tom Garrison (1990) and Jason Medearis (1999) for the UW record in the event.
“Jordan’s been a consistent hurdler for us his whole career,” Berryhill said. “This outdoor season, he’s been even more consistent. It was neat for him to go out there and tie the record today, and hopefully he’ll get that [record] in the near future.”
Wyoming’s 4×100 relay team of Jace Marx, Kevin Blackett, Charles and Sam Kirkeide continued their journey up the UW all-time list in 2017, posting a time of 40.60 seconds, good enough for third all-time and just six hundredths of a second behind the school record. The team won the event by nearly a second.
“That’s a great group of guys,” Berryhill said of the relay squad. “They’re excited to train together and race together every week. I’ve been really impressed with their consistency, not only in the 4×100, but also in their training. They’ve been doing everything right.”
The women’s 4×100 relay team of Ja’la Henderson, Jordan Edmonds, Melina Harris and Davis took home a second place finish with a time of 45.74 seconds, as Duke edged the Cowgirls by just a hundredth of a second.
UW also performed well in the middle distance events, with Ricky Faure and Bryce Ailshie finishing 2 and 3 in the men’s 800 meters while Kerry White and Cassidy Meade finishing in 3rd and 4th in the women’s event. Faure recorded a season best 1:49.37, while Ailshie had a career best 1:49.78. White and Meade recorded season best times of 2:10.71 and 2:10.91, respectively.
Junior Damon Unland recorded a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 198 feet to take third place, while Garrett Lynch recorded a new PR in the shot put, throwing 53-10.25.
Senior Scott Carter recorded another victory in the triple jump, winning the event by over four feet with a mark of 54-3.75.
“Overall, it was a great meet for us,” Berryhill said. “We’re out here in California and it’s a bigger meet, and we saw our team everywhere cheering each other on. I think they did a good job feeding on good performance after good performance.”
Track and Field will be back in action on April 21 at the Jack Christiansen Invite in Fort Collins.
