Tennis finishes season strong against CSU

The Cowgirls tennis team continued its win streak with a 4-0 win over the CSU Rams to conclude its regular season.

This win marked their 17th of the season, and further added to the team’s all-time single season win record. The team was also 5-0 in the Mountain West Conference and won all ten home games.

“The team was ready to go from the beginning, didn’t mess around and it was all business,” head coach Dean Clower said. “In doubles, we executed our game plan and it continued in singles. It’s a good way to get ready for conference. We will celebrate senior day and then get back to business on Monday.”

The team started off strongly with a doubles point with two quick wins by the teams Magdalena Stencel/Milka Genkova and Elisa Koonik/Tessa van Der Ploeg with wins of 6-1 and 6-2 respectively.

Only three singles matches were finished, with the Pokes taking all three. Van Der Ploeg defeated her opponent decisively with 6-1 and 6-0 scores. Stencel added another point to the day with 6-1 and 6-1 scores. Dorottya Jonas finished the day with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over her opponent to bring the final score to 4-0 in favor of Wyoming.

The matchup also was senior day, and the two seniors Dorottya Jonas and Miranda Talbert were the two seniors honored.

“This was a good way to send off Dorottya and Miranda on senior day,” Clower said. “Dorottya has had one of the best careers in the history of any of the athletes we’ve had here and Miranda has been a big contributor to our program.”

The Cowgirls will be traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada this week to play in the MWC Championship, but when and who against haven’t been announced as of yet.
