Food trucks are something seldom heard about or talked about in the city of Laramie, but there is one food truck in particular with its very own style and taste that is deserving of some recognition.
Bear Bait Grill first opened in Laramie on July 16, 2011, and over the last nearly six years it has been a part of many events within the Laramie community, and has offered quality food for a wide variety of occasions.
With an uncommon name such as Bear Bait, one has to ask where inspiration for the name came from. Bear Bait Grill’s owner and operator, Norman Frost, explained just how he chose the unique name for his business.
“I guess I was thinking about rock ’n’ roll bands like Led Zeppelin, and how you always name your band or something after whatever is gonna totally destroy it,” Frost said.
Bear Bait Grill cooks a variety of foods including traditional American cuisine such as burgers, brisket, pulled pork and other types of barbecue, and other styles of food such as fish and chips, bratwurst, lamb and gyros. All menu items rotate so that something different is offered each day.
Bear Bait Grill is located in West Laramie at the corner of Snowy Range Road and Adams Street in front of Philips 66 gas station, but the truck’s wheels certainly do not go to waste.
Frost said Bear Bait Grill has had the opportunity to cater for multiple events around town and even at the university.
In the past the food truck has catered at events for the UW football team, the Johnson Career Center on campus for the past three years, Snowy Range Music Festival and the Laramie Farmers Market during the summer season.
Though Bear Bait is open to catering for any event or occasion, Frost said he does have a favorite type of function to work at.
“I always like working at rock ’n’ roll shows and music festivals,” Frost said.
Frost commented on one of his favorite parts about running the food truck, which is receiving positive feedback from Bear Bait Grill’s customers. He said more specifically he loves when someone tells him Bear Bait made the best sandwich they have ever had in their life.
“It is an even better compliment when the person who says it is older, because you know they have actually had tons of sandwiches,” Frost said.
Bear Bait Grill clearly demonstrates a passion for customer satisfaction and service, alongside Frost’s obvious love for culinary art and preparing food for others.
Frost has spent a major part of his life cooking since discovering his fondness for cooking food and serving it to others. He put his love for culinary art into effect when he attended culinary school when he was younger.
“I have always liked cooking for other people,” Frost said. “But then you can’t always do exactly what you really want to do.”
Frost was searching for a little more freedom in his ability to make food and also prepare it for other people, which is exactly what inspired him to open Bear Bait Grill six years ago, and what has led him to serving food around the Laramie community today.
Bear Bait Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Frost said he is always open to Bear Bait Grill catering for various functions around town and on UW’s campus, and everyone can catch the food truck away from its usual location at the Laramie Farmers Market and Freedom Has a Birthday this summer.
