The Wyoming men’s golf team concluded the Mountain West Championship on April 23 at the Omni Tucson National – Catalina Course in Tucson, Arizona by shooting 296 (+8) in the third round.
The Pokes finished the tournament with a team score of 872 (+8) to place eighth out of 11 teams.
Senior Ryan Wallen paced the Pokes with a 209 for the tournament, which was good enough to tie for third place. It is the highest ever finish for a UW golfer at the MW Championship.
“First of all, I’m happy for Ryan (Wallen). He played a great tournament,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “We tried hard today, but we struggled in the last few holes. There’s no doubt we would have liked to finish better, but it just wasn’t our day. It’s tough, but we’ve had a nice year and there are a lot of young guys on our team. I’m confident in where this program is headed.”
Junior Glenn Workman shot a 222 (+6) over three rounds, which was good enough to tie for 38th. Sophomore John Murdock and junior Aaron Lickteig finished the tournament at 224 (+8), as they tied for 42nd.
Junior Drew McCullough shot an 83 (+11) on the final day after shooting 72 (E) and 73 (+1) in the first two rounds, putting him in a tie for 49th with an overall score of 229 (+12). Every Wyoming golfer had at least one round at par or better for the tournament.
The Cowboys were in sixth place after day two with a score of 576 (E), with Wallen leading the way by shooting a score of 70 (-2).
“This is a fun championship because of how tight it is. We’ll just stick to our process tomorrow and see what happens. I’d love to have a low score tomorrow and we’re really focused on that right now,” Jensen said after the second round.
UNLV took home the team conference title with a total score of 846 (-18) for the tournament, followed by Colorado State at 847 (-17) and Boise State at 848 (-16). San Diego State and New Mexico were also within four strokes of the title.
Boise State had the top two individual finishers, with Brian Humphreys shooting a 204 (-12) for the tournament and Donny Hopoi finishing with a score of 206 (-10). Wallen finished tied with Andre Garcia of New Mexico and Gunn Yang of San Diego State for third.
