Saturday, Oct. 7 at 9 a.m., there is going to be a Rad T-shirt Run/Walk. What is a Rad T-shirt Run/Walk? It is a 5K run or walk to get involved on campus and stay active while still participating in the fun. This is a free event for faculty, staff and students.
The first 100 people to sign up for the event will receive a free t-shirt which they can decorate any way they so choose.
According to a few students, the run looked like a fun way to get involved on campus and have a good time with their friends, but they didn’t know the main purpose of the event.
The remaining question being imposed is why is the school hosting a 5K run? The run is a way for the University to motivate staff, faculty and students to become more active in everyday life. The foundation partnering with the university and also supporting the run is Exercise is Medicine on Campus.
Exercise is Medicine on Campus is a foundation that’s mission statement is to make movement and exercise a part of the daily culture on campus, and giving students the essentials to be able to make healthy decisions and create healthy habits. The reasoning for this foundations concern for college students is due to the factors that can negatively impact students and make it extremely difficult to remain healthy while living their lives.
Factors such as a new environment, being independent for possibly the first time and added stress such as financial responsibilities and academic obligations. All of which are things most incoming students have not experienced before attending college. Continuing to have a healthy lifestyle in college is extremely important. Exercise is Medicine on Campus has partnered with The University of Wyoming to ultimately get the staff, students and faculty moving with the goal of impacting the campus in a positive way.
The advertising for the run posted around campus was too vague to really draw in people to get involved in the event.
Erika Corbitt, a UW student, said, “It looks like it could be fun but I don’t know that I’ll participate.” Corbitt wasn’t sure of the purpose of the run, therefore, was deterred from participating in the run at all.
Another UW student, Jessie McCarthy, said, “It just seems like something fun to do around campus, I didn’t know there was a purpose behind it.”
Even though McCarthy didn’t know that there was a purpose for the 5K, she still would like to participate.
McCarthy said, “If more of the Health science majors knew about the reason for the run, there would probably be a lot more people that showed up.”
In addition to the mission to get the campus involved in the run. The university can be ranked amongst other colleges across the nation for the number of staff, students and faculty that get involved in the initiative of getting healthy through means of exercise.
There are three different rankings that can be awarded for participation in the initiative; including the bronze, silver and gold. Staff, students and faculty will get the opportunity to go for gold this Saturday at 9 a.m.
