UW Outdoor Program offers full moon hike

Experience the full moon from Happy Jack trail. Thursday Oct. 5, the University of Wyoming Outdoor Program will hike around Happy Jack during the rise of the full moon. This three-mile hike will take you up to headquarters overlook.

“These trips are usually full; this one is full at 12 participants,” Justin Wallace, outdoor program office assistant, said.

The Outdoor Program usually sponsors a trip like this every semester. The trips meeting time has changed from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The outdoor program will be providing headlamps for participants, and the peaceful light of the full moon will also create illumination.

“This is my first year as a trip leader for UW, but I have been a trip leader before,” Jo Farrell, a trip leader said.

This trip will inspire adventure and mystery, the trail can be experienced differently in the dark when the unknown lies ahead.

“This is my first year too,” Zoe Ash-Kropf, a trip leader said. “I have done trips like this before though.”

Hiking along Happy Jack is a great way to explore the mountainous area outside of Laramie. Guided by trip leaders, Zoe Ash-Kropf and Jo Farrell, the headquarters overlook on Happy Jack trail will be lit by the light of the full moon.

Farrell said, “I shadowed the trip last year. It’s cool to go hiking at night, the stars are really nice. The dark makes it seem more adventurous and the trail is so different at night.”

Pricing for the hike starts at $18 for students to attend and rises to $22 for faculty and staff to participate. The Outdoor Program will be providing transportation to the Happy Jack trail site.

This hike is one of many exciting, adventurous trips that the outdoor program will be hosting this semester.

“This trip is great for anybody who enjoys hiking as well as those who would like to meet new people,” Ash-Kropf said. “It’s a perfect trip for people who like the outdoors.”
