The Men’s Club Hockey Team is closing in on their first half of the scheduled season games with away matches against California State Fullerton and California State Northridge this upcoming weekend.
UW’s Men’s Hockey Team has a promising start in conference play with a record of (3-5-0). The BMHC (Big Mountain Hockey Conference) consists of; UNC, CSU, CU Boulder, DU, Metro, and UW.
The beginning of the hockey season starts every year in the first week of September with open tryouts welcoming new players and challenging seasoned players.
Hockey season is a long stretch that starts in September and goes all the way through March, depending on the possible placement into the regional and national tournament.
The majority of games are played throughout Colorado, South and North Dakota, California, and Utah due to a recent change in conferences.
The recent relocation of conferences by the University of Wyoming and Colorado teams from MWCHL (Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League) to the BMHC (Big Mountain Hockey Conference) has caused setbacks as far as advancements to the regional tournaments.
The Cowboys have been unsuccessful for the past two years with qualifying for the regional tournament.
However, there has not been a clean sweep in any series of games within the conference so far in the 2017 season.
The lack of domination from a single team in this year’s conference brings a promising successful future to this season for the Cowboys.
“I think there is a lot of potential with this team, there is no clear dominator in our conference so it’s really anybody’s game,” President and Assistant Captain of the Hockey Club, Eric Tomasello said.
The potential for a positive outcome in the 2017 season starts with the diverse depth of talent within this year’s roster
The optimism from the captain comes from the talent of the top goal scorers; Mark Kunitz-4 goals and 3 assists, Cambell Mackay-4 goals and 3 assists, Alec Macdougall-4 goals and 2 assists and the top assisters; Brandon Dewar-2 goals 8 assists, Dan Franks-2 goals and 7 assists.
The active goalies are; Samuel Mallory and Jacob Brock
“We always welcome the idea of new players who are eager to be a part of our club team,” Tomasello expressed after discussing the opportunity of new players.
Being involved with a club sport allows individuals to experience the furthering of collegiate level athletics in sports that were not necessarily offered in high school.
The competitiveness is still very much alive in the University of Wyoming’s club sports as well as the excitement and passion that comes along with playing your favorite sport.
If you are a fan, player, or spectator that is interested in hockey, the University of Wyoming’s Club Hockey Team will always need your support.
