Cowgirls basketball defeats the Eagles

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls hosted the Chadron State Eagles Friday, Nov. 3, for the first exhibition game of the 2017-2018 season following the rededication ceremony of Wyoming’s Arena-Auditorium at 2:30 p.m.

Governor Matt Mead, UW President Laurie Nichols and UW Athletics Director Tom Burman all spoke at the ceremony recognizing the donors to the $30 million project on the new stadium.

The Cowgirls bested the eagles by 52 points in a 77-25 victory giving the team their first win of the 2017-2018 season.

Cowgirl’s head coach Joel Legerski started his 15th season as head coach in a positive direction following his 22-10 (13-5 MW) last season.

Wyoming dominated the entirety of the game with 31-60 field goal attempts (51.7 %) and 10-29 three point attempts (34.5%).

Chadron State with a low success rate from both the field goal and three-point range had 9-57 field goal attempts (15.7%) and 2-20 three point attempts (10%).

The Cowgirls were led by junior Marta Gomez who obtained her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Seniors Marleah Cambell and Skyler Snodgrass also contributed to the team’s large lead over the Eagles with 12 points from Cambell and nine points from Snodgrass.

The Eagle’s lead scorer, sophomore Jessica Lovitt, ended with seven points followed by senior Kalli Feddersen with five points holding 12 out of the 25 points from the two main contributors for Chadron State’s loss.

Every player on the UW’s bench was able to contribute in the first win of the season allowing 24 assists to the 31 baskets by the Cowgirls.

Wyoming held the lead through the entire game forcing the Eagles to trail in points, rebounds, and passing possession.

The Cowgirls landed on top defensibly against the Eagles with 12 -8 steals, 38 -20 defensive rebounds, and 2-2 in blocks.

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls will host Adam State Grizzlies next Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in the new Arena Auditorium.
