UW rodeo coach passes away from gunshot wound

UW club rodeo coach George Howard, 59, died this weekend after sustaining a gunshot wound.

Details behind Howard’s death are still unknown as the incident is still under investigation.

According to Converse County Undersheriff Nathan Hughes, on Friday, Nov. 26, authorities responded to a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound southwest of Douglas. Howard was brought to the Converse County Memorial Hospital before he was moved to the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.

It was there that he passed away on Sunday

Howard coached the UW rodeo team for the last 20 years. The team saw success throughout Howard’s tenure. The Cowgirls won the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) twice, once in 2007 and again in 2009 and were reserve champions last season under Howard’s leadership. In 2003, the Cowboys placed second in the CNFR. The UW rodeo team also obtained several Central Rocky Mountain regional titles with Howard as their coach.

UW President Laurie Nichols released a statement on Howard’s passing on Monday.

“The UW community is saddened to learn of the death of Coach Howard. He touched the lives of many cowgirls and cowboys during his 20 years as the coach of our rodeo program, and we appreciate the leadership he provided for so many years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many friends, including our rodeo student-athletes, past and present.”
