Wyoming takes advantage of early signing period in its first year by signing 20 players to the football team for the 2018 season. The coaching staff was able to be proactive with an early signing date, being on Dec. 20, instead of having to wait for athletes to sign their letter of intent in February.
“What coaches had to do was either be reactive or proactive to this signing date,” Head Coach Craig Bohl said. “I believe [we] were very proactive. Our recruiting office had come up with a great plan, great vision and our coaches worked hard.”
Due to this hard work, Wyoming now has locked in 20 new players before the last games of the season. Wyoming was also able to get all of their needs filled and was able to sign players from almost every position.
In this recruitment class Wyoming signed one quarterback, one running back, two wide receivers, one tight end, three Offensive linemen, three defensive linemen, three Linebackers, four defensive secondary players, one athlete and one long snapper.
Bohl kept to his commitment to recruiting in the state of Wyoming by signing two players from the state including the top ranked recruit in the state of Wyoming, Blayne Baker.
As far as other states go, Wyoming received the most recruits from the state of California with nine, followed by four from Colorado, two more from Illinois and one from Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin.
In this class, Wyoming is receiving a lot of players that were recognized on state levels. All four of the players coming out of Colorado are ranked in the top 20 for recruits from the state of Colorado according to 247 Sports. Linebacker Chad Muma was ranked as the ninth overall prospect from Colorado; wider receiver Gunner Gentery, brother of former Cowboy and current Chicago Bears player Tanner Gentry, was ranked No. 11 overall; defensive back Cameron Murray was ranked No. 14 overall and offensive linemen Zach Watts was ranked No. 20 overall.
Reow Jackson from Oregon is ranked No. 17 in the state by 247 Sports. Jackson is listed as an athlete for his position showing the ability to be useful all over the field. Jackson played both safety and quarterback in high school and was named to 5-A Allstate teams for both positions.
Both recruits from the state of Illinois are ranked inside of the top 60. Tight end Jackson Marcotte was ranked No. 55 in the state and wide receiver Camron Donathlan was ranked No. 59 in the state. Donathlan will also be a part of the Track and field team at UW. As a junior, Donathlan was able to clear seven feet on his high jump at the state track meet. That height would have been good enough for fourth place at last year’s NCAA national track meet.
Wyoming also gained the commitment from two three-star athletes from the state of California. Quarterback Sean Chambers and defensive back Miles Williams. Muma and Jackson were also ranked as three-star recruits according to 247 Sports.
Wyoming was also able to snag the fifth best long snapper, Jesse Hooper, in the nation from Draper, Utah.
With this much talent coming into the Cowboys this next season, Wyoming fans can expect solid football teams for years to come.
