Saturday, Jan. 27, the Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team (8-3) took on the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Dome of Doom. The Bulldogs are the Cowboys Big 12 division rivals. The matches started at 6pm and the first 200 students in attendance were greeted with free Qdoba burritos.
The first match of the night featured Drake Foster from Wyoming and Sean Williams of Fresno State in the 125 pound weight class. Foster was able to win this match by pin after falling behind earlier in the match.
The Second match of the night was of the 133 pound weight class. The Wrestler for Wyoming was Montorie Bridges against Fresno State’s Trevor Williams. Bridges won the second match of the night for Wyoming by a pin in the first period.
This was followed by the 141 weight class Bryce Meredith (Wyoming) faced Chris Deloza (Fresno State). Meredith won this match as well giving Wyoming a 18-0 lead overall.
The 149 lb match ensued featuring Sam Turner of Wyoming and Khristian Olivas of Fresno State. The match was challenged by Fresno State using video replay in the third period. Fresno State won the challenge and Olivas took a 7-3 lead. Olivas was able to take the match on points. Fresnos first win of the night.
The next match was Archie Colgan of the Pokes wrestling Greg Gaxiola of the Bulldogs, in the 157lb division. Colgan took the match by technical fall.
The score at intermission was 23-3. Wyoming junior wrestlers got the chance to wrestle on the same mat as the Cowboys during intermission.
The first match after intermission was of the 165 pound weight class. The wrestlers were Branson Ashworth (Wyoming) and Isaiah Hokit (Fresno). Ashworth won the match by major decision with a score of 19-5.
This was followed by the 174 pound weight class featuring Kyle Pope for the Cowboys and Dominic Kincaid of the Bulldogs. Pope won the match by fall in under a minute. Bringing the Pokes overall lead to to 33-3.
Dewey Krueger of Wyoming wrestled Richie Brandt (Fresno) in the 184 pound division. Krueger won another match for the Pokes winning by points with a score of 12-5.
The 197 pound division that followed was between Luke Paine of Wyoming and Angel Solis of Fresno State. Paine took the match by major decision with a score of 13-5.
The final match of the night, the heavyweight division featured Sam Eagan (Wyoming) and AJ Nevills (Fresno). Nevills won by decision in what was a really close match of 3-2.
The Final Score of the duel was 40-3 with Wyoming coming out victorious and improving their record to 9-3.
The Cowboys next duel is Feb. 4 in the UniWyo Sports Complex against divisional rivals the Oklahoma Sooners.
