Saturday, Jan. 27, the University of Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team took on Divisional rivals, the San Jose State Spartans. Gametime was 2:05 pm in the Arena Auditorium.
The Cowgirls started off the first half strong, the score going into half was 36-24 in favor of the Pokes.
Players that stood out in the first half were Liv Roberts with 14 points, who was 4-5 from three point range, and Bailee Cotton with 12. Cotton also lead the cowgirls in rebounds with five.
The Spartans leading scorers at half were Fa-Ko-Fieme’a Hafoka with eight, and Analyss Benally with six.
At half time local children got the chance to scrimmage each other on the court that the players they idolize had just played on.
Coming out of half the Pokes were able to maintain a steady lead with a score of 41- 30 with 6 minutes left in the third quarter.
The Spartans started to gain on the Pokes, the score going into the 4th quarter was 43-37 in favor of Wyoming. Cowgirl fans were not happy about this and met the refs with jeers after a couple of questionable calls.
As Wyoming started regaining their lead the crowd ignited, with just over 6 minutes in the game the score was 49-39 in favor of the Pokes.
The final score of the game was 58-46 Wyoming on top. The leading scores for the Pokes were Roberts with 20 points, and Cotton with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Cowgirls next game will be back at home Wednesday the 31st of January, in the border war against the Colorado State Rams.
