Thor, held captive on the planet Sakaar without his trademark hammer, must assemble a team made up of such Marvel heavyweights like Valkeriye and Loki to stop the villainous Hela and the impending doom of the Asgardian civilization–Ragnarök.
7220 Entertainment is hosting a Marvel vs DC “Super Double Feature” on Friday, Feb. 16.
The event will feature showings of Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” at 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and DC Comic’s “Justice League” at 7:30 p.m.
“Thor: Ragnarok” finds the famous Norse hero back in his quest for justice, this time taking place after the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and four years after the events of “Thor: The Dark World.”
Along the way, the stoic Marvel hero will also face off with fellow Avenger the Incredible Hulk in a gladiatorial duel for the ages.
Receiving favorable reviews from fans and critics alike, Thor: Ragnarok currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised the film for its acting, humor and loyalty to the comic source material.
Christopher Llewellyn Reed, a critic from Film Festival Today and featured reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes, offered similar accolades. “Right from the start, Thor: Ragnarok feels different than its predecessors (Thor and Thor: The Dark World), more comedic in tone and lighter in palette.”
Not to be outdone by its rival, Justice League offers another superhero blockbuster.
After the events of “Batman v. Superman,” the famous billionaire Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman are inspired by the Man of Steel’s selfless acts.
He enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) to defend earth from a multitude of threats. They will face-off against Steppenwolf, the herald and second in command to alien warlord Darkseid, who is charged with hunting down three valuable artifacts hidden on Earth.
Together, Batman and Wonder Woman recruit a team of meta-humans, consisting of legendary DC characters like Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash to defend Earth from this newfound threat.
Reactions to Justice League have been somewhat mixed, with a modest 40% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but a solid 77% from moviegoers.
7220 Entertainment, hosts weekly film viewing events throughout the semester.
“We have a movie every Friday, usually in the Union Family Room,” Hannah Lewis, the 7220 Film Committee chair, said.
However, this week’s showing will differ slightly from film showings in the past.
“For this one we are changing the show times from our usual 6:30, 9:00 and 11:30. Instead we are doing a 5:00 matinee, 7:30 and 10:00, so we will try out some new show times,” Lewis said.
Excitement is growing among students as well. Anahi Morillon is a student in the social work program here at the University of Wyoming and is looking forward to the event.
“I have seen movies organized by 7220 in the past, and recently saw Wonder Woman,” she said. “I really enjoy some of the events they put on.”
All three showings will be in the Wyoming Union Family Room, and are free for students. Free popcorn will also be provided at all showings, and prizes will be given away during the 10 p.m. showing of Thor: Ragnarok.
