Unlike the fall semester, University of Wyoming’s 7220 Entertainment program will host three trivia nights during the spring semester with remaining dates for student participation being March 21 and April 18.
Trivia nights will be held in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union starting at 8 p.m. The event is for UW students only.
“Trivia will consist of a variety of topics, and those who rank in the top will be awarded prizes,” Erika Baker, a marketing intern with the Campus Activities Center, said. “Students can have up to four participants on their teams.”
7220 Entertainment is the student fee-funded entertainment programming organization for students at UW. Their purpose is to provide cost-effective, diverse events that entertain and educate students and Laramie community members.
Trivia Nights are a great way for students to participate in a mind-challenging knowledge test while sharing a few drinks with their friends.
The Gardens serves a variety of beer (including craft beers) and appetizers. Students must be 21 or older to purchase beer, however, those who are underage are welcome to participate.
The trivia night questions are split into different categories or rounds. Generally, every trivia night has a different topic than the previous. Each team is given the chance to answer and the team with the most points at the end is declared the winner. Winners are generally paid in cash.
“Trivia nights create an exciting atmosphere here at the bar,” Fernando Munoz, bartender at the Gardens, said. “People come in with all their friends, have a couple of drinks and exercise their minds in a challenging game of trivia. I certainly enjoy the vibe that is created here.”
According to an article in the Spectator, trivia nights were first introduced in the UK as pub quizzes in the 1970s, by a company called Burns and Porter, to get people into pubs on quieter nights. Their popularity has now spread all over the world.
“I would say that Trivia Nights definitely attract more customers than a regular Wednesday night,” Munoz said. “We see a lot more people coming in and the union is evidently noisier than any other weekday.”
The game master or quizmasters, members of 7220 entertainment, are the organizers. The series of questions are in relation to the subject of the night, and they become more difficult as teams proceed through the rounds.
Karan Sodhi is an engineering graduate student who participated in the games last semester
“Trivia nights are a great way to get rid of stress in the middle of the week,” Sodhi said. “I wouldn’t encourage getting drunk but a couple of drinks and the game is a great way to spend a Wednesday evening. I have never actually won a game though.”
7220 Entertainment is seeking volunteers to join one or more of its five committees responsible for planning events for students.
