Rumors circulated of a potential shooting at Laramie High School last week, however, Laramie Police Department (LPD) investigated and found the rumors to be false.
On Feb. 21, LPD was notified of a possible shooting at Laramie High School and started the investigation immediately. The school was checked and nothing unordinary was found. The person, who spread the rumor, was found and interviewed.
“I’m very glad we didn’t find it to be a threat,” Laramie Police Department Lieutenant Gwen Smith said, “No one is in danger, which is most important.”
LPD has school resource officers who are located at the high school and respond when something unusual happens.
Laramie High School Principal, Chuck Kern, said that when the officials of the school heard of the rumors regarding the shooting, they immediately called LPD and started the investigation of the case, which was found to be false.
“I think the chances of a shooting in our school are very, very low, but I can’t say impossible,” an alumnus of Laramie High School Adrian Schneider said. “In the event of a shooting, there are definitely some design flaws in the new building, for example, all the glass walls. But I’m confident that the school is safe.”
The call was determined not to purposely mislead or scare people.
“If it were determined to be an attempt to scare, to threaten, we have a statute to call it terroristic threat as the charge,” Smith said. “It was not the case in this instance. Because it wasn’t an illegal matter, it was handled by the school. So, we are not aware what the school district is doing.”
The student is currently under the disciplinary action of the Laramie High School and it is not yet known what the results are.
