Since the mid-19th-century baseball has been one of America’s favorite pastimes and as the MLB continues their spring training, the University of Wyoming Club Baseball Team has started their season.
This past weekend the team went down to Denver and played in a tournament where they went 1-2, while finishing the weekend with a losing record there was plenty of upside with the Cowboys routing the Colorado School of Mines.
The Cowboys are looking to continue the level of play they displayed against the Colorado School of Mines. They are looking forward to having a good season.
“We have really high expectations, it looks to be a good year, we have a lot of depth,” coach, former player and senior geology major Charlie Ogradey said.
Based on the Cowboys pre-season these expectations look to be quite realistic for the Pokes. The Cowboys went undefeated against a semi-pro team out of Cheyenne, the Cheyenne Pirates, this offseason.
The Cowboys also went 1-1 against the University of Northern Colorado. This is good considering fall games are typically used to evaluate incoming players. These early wins show the talent the team will have over the next few years.
The Cowboys are set to go to Mesquite, Nebraska this coming weekend for the Swingin’ Spring tournament. In years past they have played teams such as the University of Oregon and UC Santa Barbara in similar tournaments.
All the traveling allows the team to create bonds, which is one of Ogradey’s favorite aspects of being a part of the baseball team here at the UW, along with being able to continue doing what he loves.
President of the club and pitcher for the team Jack De Ryk, a senior studying civil engineering, shares the same views when it comes to developing the younger players on the team.
“I want to ensure we do well this year in our season,” De Ryk said.
The team is looking forward to getting deeper into the season.
“We’re really excited, we have a lot of talent and depth, along with a lot of players who can play different positions,” Ogradey said. “This is also the best offensive team I’ve seen in my time here.”
So as the Cowboys continue into their season be sure to keep an eye out for their success.
Students at the university are equally excited for the season to start.
“Some of my earliest memories involve baseball so being able to watch my college play baseball is really exciting and I’m looking forward to it,” economics major Trey Campoell said.
Be sure to go out and catch your University of Wyoming baseball team at one of their home games at Cowboy field.
