Seth Jones is running for the office of president of ASUW, with his vice presidential candidate Alex Mulhall. Currently, Jones is serving as the chief of legislative affairs for ASUW, while Mulhall is a senator and chair of the RSO Funding Board.
Jones said that his experience as a current member of the ASUW executive board gives him insight that he will use if he is elected as ASUW president.
“The experience I have working in the office, getting to work by the current president, Ben Wetzel, and see what types of things he has to go through,” Jones said.
Mulhall said that her experience running the RSO funding board this year gives her an understanding of a number of issues that relate to the ASUW body, RSOs and the RSO funding board.
With the transition from one administration to another and the introduction of new senators to ASUW, there is always a learning curve. Jones said that their experience in ASUW will go a long way in smoothing out that curve.
“When we start in the fall, we can all get off on the right foot and know the general idea of where we want to go towards with our year,” Jones said. “Instead of trying to figure out our place. We already have the knowledge that we need to, so we don’t have to spend as much time catching up and learning new processes.”
Jones and Mulhall have three main platforms they are running on, inclusivity, student development and campus relationships.
“Our first being inclusivity, meaning we want to take action to create a more inclusive and understanding campus,” Mulhall said. “Our second is student development, meaning we want to prioritize the time and funding for student development with activities through ASUW and partnerships with other student groups. And also through cultivating campus relationships, meaning that we believe it is important for students on campus to collaborate and communicate more.”
Mulhall said that they want to create a better environment on campus where more students feel included and can go to ASUW for assistance in accomplishing their goals. This includes the creation of listening panels to assist ASUW in providing these services.
The reason that Jones is running for ASUW president is because ASUW has been such a big and fulfilling part of his time on this campus and he wants to make sure that everyone has the same opportunities.
“ASUW, in general, has offered me a home in the University of Wyoming and the opportunities I have been able to have through ASUW,” Jones said. “It was a great opportunity for me, but there might be some other people who just couldn’t get involved due to other circumstances and felt left out and that’s disappointing to hear.”
Mulhall said that she is running because her two main passions are politics and social justice. The office of vice president is a place where she can follow both of those passions and be in a position to make those effective changes.
