Christian group meets opposition from UW LGBTQIA+ community

Yesterday, Cheyenne Christian Fellowship (CCF) members gathered in front of Ross Hall to talk to people about Christianity

and a number of other topics.

“The reason for being here is simply to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the fact that he died for us, shared his blood to save us from sin,” Fellowship member Marlin Miller said. “We all are sinners. We all are condemned to hell. And we have no choice outside of Jesus Christ to be saved.”

Later, representatives of LGBTQIA+ community at UW gathered on the other side of the walkway with their pride flags to show that people should not be discriminated by any religion.

“I came here to hear what these preachers and priests were trying to preach,” Dexter Walters, astrophysics major, said. “And, instead, you know, I walked into opinion and I walked into controversy. I walked into conflict. I walked into the judgment.”

New Testament and expressing their opinions on a plethora of topics.

“People don’t believe what is said in the book of Genesis,” Miller said. “They don’t believe God created the Earth. In fact, what we believe indeed. Creation by a powerful being makes a lot more sense than Darwinism.”

CCF also addressed the different types of groups based on ethnicity and skin tone that are not like them and do not practice their religion.

“They’ve been saying that persons of color, Muslims, other groups of people, who are not like them, are going to hell,” UW International Studies major Dakota Stern said. “Because they are not like them, it’s a cliché that [transmogrifies] religious rhetoric for their own objectives.”

CCF addressed the role of women and homosexuality outside of their religious practices.

“They are here, and their message is mainly against queer people and women,” LGBTQIA+ community member Q Quallen said. “And that homosexuals are sinners and going to hell.”

Ken Draves, CCF member said, “Homosexuality is one of the many sins that we are here to speak against.”

The LGBTQIA+ community said that they don’t agree with the concept of discrimination of anyone by any religion.

“We are here in solidarity of all the people they are condemning,” Quallen said. “And we are here to show that we don’t believe that any particular group of people should be discriminated against. I am a religious person and I believe in the God that loves all of his children and doesn’t seek to punish them for who they are.”
