The cost of attending college – including textbooks, room and board, food, tuition and fees – is not cheap. Fortunately, students have a chance to chip away at that cost with a new scholarship contest.
The online company Apartment Guide is hosting its first-ever college scholarship contest, which will award two $2,500 scholarships. The contest opened Sept. 1 and closes Oct. 31.
The online application form for the first round of the contest includes a 500 to 600 word essay answering, “What makes a home a home?”
“We expect that the entries will be personal and heartfelt,” Susan Friedman from Apartment Guide said. “Writers should create a point of view of the space, locale and how it makes one feel to be living there through words. We anticipate that students will provide a small glimpse into their personalities, and of course, their life experiences, either living with family, friends, or independently. We have high expectations that the entries will be meaningful and touching.”
First-round applicants will then be narrowed down to 10 finalists. Finalists will have two weeks to create a 1 to 3 minute video to accompany their essays. The essays and videos will be put on the Apartment Guide website so the public can vote on the best essay/video combination. The two entrants with the most votes will win.
To enter, the contestant must live in the United States, be at least 17 years old, be a full-time undergraduate student and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Prize money can be spent on anything education-related, including tuition, housing, books, tutors or study abroad costs.
